Varicocele in Teenagers & Young Men
Varicocele often begins in adolescence, but many boys are too shy to mention their symptoms.
When Does Varicocele Appear in Teenagers?
- Commonly between 13–19 years
- Usually on the left side
- May be discovered during school medical check-ups, sports exams or incidentally
Signs in Teenagers
- Visible or palpable veins in the scrotum
- Complaints of dragging pain or heaviness, especially after sports
- Noticeable difference in testicular size
- Embarrassment or reluctance to talk about it
Why Early Evaluation Matters
In teenagers, a significant varicocele can:
- Affect testicular growth
- Potentially influence future fertility
- Cause psychological distress, shame or anxiety
Timely evaluation allows:
- Monitoring in mild cases
- Early intervention in significant cases to protect testicular function
Treatment Options for Teenagers
Treatment decisions depend on:
- Grade of varicocele
- Symptoms (pain, heaviness)
- Testicular size difference
- Family expectations and future fertility plans
Options may include observation, microsurgical repair or laparoscopic correction in selected cases.
If you are a parent or a teenager concerned about varicocele, don’t ignore it.
