What is Varicocele Embolisation?
Varicocele embolisation is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. A small catheter is introduced into a vein (usually in the groin or neck), and coils or a special solution are used to block the faulty veins causing the varicocele.
No large incisions. No stitches on the scrotum.
Who is a Candidate?
You may be suitable for embolisation if:
- You have a symptomatic varicocele (pain, discomfort)
- You have abnormal semen analysis and want a minimally invasive option
- You wish to avoid general anaesthesia or scrotal surgery
- There is a recurrent varicocele after previous surgery (selected cases)
Final suitability is decided after detailed evaluation by Dr. Adarsh M Patil and an interventional radiologist.
How is the Procedure Done?
- A small puncture is made in a vein in the groin or neck.
- A thin tube (catheter) is guided under X-ray into the testicular vein.
- The abnormal veins are visualised and blocked using coils/sclerosant.
- Blood flow is re-directed through healthy veins.
- The catheter is removed and a small bandage is applied.
Usually done as a day care procedure.
