Varicocele Symptoms & When to See a Doctor
Varicocele symptoms can range from silent to quite bothersome.
Common Symptoms of Varicocele
- Dull, aching pain in the scrotum
- Heaviness or dragging sensation, especially on one side
- Pain that worsens on standing, running, lifting weights or during the day
- Relief when lying down
- Visible or prominent veins in the scrotum
- One testicle appearing smaller or softer
- Discomfort during or after sex (in some men)
In many men, varicocele is painless and detected only during fertility evaluation.
Symptoms Related to Fertility
Varicocele can affect sperm production and quality. You may suspect a problem if:
- You and your partner are trying to conceive for more than 1 year without success
- Your semen analysis shows low sperm count, low motility, or abnormal forms
- You have been told you have “unexplained” male factor infertility
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should consult a specialist if:
- You have persistent scrotal pain or heaviness
- You notice enlarged scrotal veins or a “bag of worms” feeling
- There is testicular size difference
- You are planning marriage and worried about future fertility
- You are already trying for pregnancy and have been diagnosed with varicocele
Dangers of Ignoring Symptoms
Ignoring a significant varicocele may:
Worsen pain and discomfort
Affect testicular growth in teenagers
Reduce sperm quality over time
If you recognise these symptoms in yourself, it’s time to get checked.
