What is Varicocele?
Varicocele is a swelling of the veins inside the scrotum (the bag of skin that holds the testicles). It is similar to varicose veins in the legs.
How Does a Varicocele Form?
Inside the scrotum, there is a network of veins around each testicle called the pampiniform plexus. These veins carry blood back towards the heart.
When the valves inside these veins become weak or the drainage pathway is blocked, blood starts to pool, leading to enlargement and twisting of the veins – this is called a varicocele.
How Common is Varicocele?
Varicocele is quite common in men, especially:
- In the age group of 15–35 years
- On the left side (because of the way the left testicular vein drains)
- In men being evaluated for infertility
Many men do not realise they have varicocele until:
- They feel discomfort or pain, or
- They get a semen analysis or ultrasound done for fertility.
Symptoms May Include
We offer complete, personalised care for varicocele, including:
Dull aching pain or heaviness in the scrotum
Pain worsens on standing, walking or exercising
Visible or palpable “bag of worms” in the scrotum
One testicle may appear smaller
Fertility issues in some men
Is Varicocele Dangerous?
Varicocele is not usually life-threatening, but it can:
- Cause chronic discomfort
- Affect sperm count and quality in some men
- Lead to testicular shrinkage over time
That’s why proper evaluation by a doctor experienced in varicocele is important.
How is Varicocele Diagnosed?
- Physical examination while standing and lying down
- Ultrasound with Doppler to visualise enlarged veins and blood flow
- Semen analysis if fertility is a concern
If you suspect you have a varicocele, don’t self-diagnose.
